Cuban shortstop Joniel Hernandez was declared a free agent by the MLB Commissioner’s Office in recent hours, according to sources.

Hernandez is a multi-tool player, 16 years old, standing 6'1" and weighing 175 pounds.

Several organizations showed interest in the speedy infielder; however, the Padres emerged as favorites in mid-2024.
