Plus some bonus answers to questions asked in my social media channels
At the end of this piece I answered some questions raised about this case on my social media channels. One might be yours, so stay until the end.
Dominican shortstop Wandy Asigen will no longer sign with the New York Yankees in the upcoming 2025–2026 international signing period. When the new signing window opens on January 15, Asigen will wear the uniform of New York’s other franchise: the Mets.
The 6-foot, 16-year-old left-handed hitter reached an agreement with the Mets on the afternoon of December 18 for around $3.8 million, multiple sources confirmed to Beisbol FR.
Several days of uncertainty followed, during which Asigen and the Jaime Ramos Academy showcased at multiple tryouts in front of MLB organizations in search of an opportunity to sign him.
But what really happened? Why did Asigen part ways with an organization that had ranked him as its top prospect since 2022? Is this type of situation normal within the current international signing system?
While the Mets now move forward with an elite prospect for the 2026 class, the Yankees have yet to finalize the selection of a candidate for the International Director position, leaving all of their pre-agreements under a cloud of uncertainty
